Quarteirão do Rossio, located in the center of Lisbon, is one of the most emblematic and historic endeavours in the city. With more than 200 years of history, this set of buildings in the Pombaline downtown went through a significant renovation, giving back new life and functionality to this iconic area. Intergesso, renowned for excellence in creating customized pieces, played a crutial role in this large project.
The Challenge
Work in Quarteirão do Rossio involves seven buildings totaling 10.000 square meters. This project aimed to not only renovate the physical structure of the buildings but also preserve their rich historic heritage. The goal was creating decorative elements that respected the original architectural styles, at the same time maintaining the exclusivity of the space. Our stakeholders’ Alves Ribeiro, HCI e Contacto Atlântico main requirement was that the pieces for the world’s biggest Zara store were unique.
The Solution
Intergesso was chosen to supply a variety of customized pieces as well as replicas for the very elaborate ceilings. More than 60 models and over 400 pieces, including cornices, ceiling centres and ceiling rings were used in this project. Using traditional molding and scuplting methods, our artisans created different architectural elements using plaster.
Each piece was meticulously worked on to assure that it respected the client’s specifications and kept the historic authenticity of the buildings. Attention to detail and to quality was fundamental, from creation to finish. The collaboration between our company and the construction teams helped execute a singular and challenging project, successfully concluded within a 40 day timeframe.
Conclusion
The renovation of Quarteirão do Rossio was successfully concluded, transforming this historic area into a modern and functional space without losing its pombaline essence. Zara’s store, which will be one of the world’s largest, will open its doors in an environment that combines luxury, history and modernity. The produced pieces by Intergesso significantly contributed to the aesthetic and atmosphere of the environment, reflecting the incomparable dedication and skill of the company.
